Early Life

Sylvie Vartan was born on October 1, 1944, in Iskretz, Bulgaria.

Her father, Georges Vartan, was of Armenian descent and a French diplomat, while her mother, Ilona Mayer, was of Bulgarian and Hungarian origin. After the Soviet occupation of Bulgaria in 1944, the Vartan family fled to Sofia and eventually to Paris in 1952.
